Why? Because spam bots are the worst, and we need to keep them out.

Also, if you use Gravatar, we might check your email (anonymized, don’t worry) to see if you have a profile pic. If you do, congrats—your face (or whatever avatar you chose) will appear next to your comment.

Media

Uploading images? Cool. Just make sure they don’t have your home address embedded in them (yes, some images do that). Otherwise, some internet detective might track down your favorite coffee shop, and we wouldn’t want that.

Cookies (Not the Tasty Kind)

If you leave a comment, you can choose to save your name, email, and website in cookies. This saves you from retyping it next time because we know how exhausting that can be. These cookies last a year—longer than most New Year’s resolutions.

Visit our login page? We set a temporary cookie to check if your browser accepts cookies. No personal data, and it vanishes when you close your browser—like a ninja.

Logging in? We’ll set a few cookies to remember your login details and screen preferences. Login cookies last two days; screen preferences last a year. Click “Remember Me” and your login sticks for two weeks. Log out, and poof—cookies gone.

Editing or publishing an article? We drop another cookie in your browser, but all it does is remember the post ID. It expires in a day—so no long-term commitment.

Embedded Content (a.k.a. Internet Inception)

Articles on this site might include embedded videos, images, or articles from other websites. When that happens, it’s like you’ve teleported to that other site—meaning they might track you, collect data, and offer you suspiciously well-targeted ads. We don’t control that, so browse wisely!

Who we share your data with

Forgot your password? When you reset it, your IP address gets included in the email—because security.

How long we retain your data

Leave a comment? It stays forever (yes, really) so we can auto-approve your future comments instead of making you wait in moderation purgatory.

If you register on our site, we store the info in your profile. You can see, edit, or delete it anytime—except your username, which is set in stone. Admins can also see and edit your info (but we promise we won’t mess with it).

What rights you have over your data

Got an account or left a comment? You can ask for a copy of all the personal data we have on you. Want to erase your data? You can request that, too. Just know we have to keep some stuff for legal and security reasons—because, well, laws.

Where your data is sent

Comments may go through an automated spam detection service, because nobody likes spam (unless it’s the kind you eat).

Comments When you drop a comment on this site, we collect the info you type in (duh) along with your IP address and browser details.
